The Hondius: Your Arctic Base Camp
The Hondius is a state-of-the-art expedition vessel designed to navigate polar waters. This comfortable ship serves as a floating base, allowing you to fully enjoy the Arctic while providing the necessary comfort after each day of exploration. Onboard, you will find cozy cabins, panoramic observation areas, and a dedicated team ensuring a unique experience.
During this Greenland kayaking expedition, the experience is designed to foster an intimate and friendly atmosphere. Onboard the ship, we will form a small group of kayakers, ensuring a deeply immersive and personalized journey through the Arctic landscapes.
Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Journey to Akureyri (Iceland)
Your adventure begins in Reykjavik, with a bus transfer (upon reservation) to Akureyri in northern Iceland. In the afternoon, you will embark on the ship and set sail towards the Denmark Strait.
Day 2: Sailing to the East Coast of Greenland
During navigation aboard the Hondius, you will have the chance to observe seabirds and possibly whales. By the end of the day, the first icebergs will appear as you approach Greenland’s east coast.
Day 3: Entering Scoresbysund
In the morning, kayak exploration along the glaciated coast of Volquart Boons Kyst and among the basalt columns and ice formations of Vikingebugt. In the afternoon, navigate through an iceberg-filled landscape near Milne Land.
Day 4: The Colors of the Cape
Kayaking near Sorte Ø, surrounded by massive icebergs with blue and white hues contrasting against the surrounding mountains. In the afternoon, sail towards Røde Fjord and Harefjord, home to musk oxen.
Day 5: Colossal Icebergs and Arctic Wildlife
Discover the massive icebergs of Hall Bredning, some towering over 100 meters high. A shore excursion near Sydkap offers the opportunity to spot Arctic hares and ancient Thule settlements.
Day 6: Encounter with Greenlandic Culture
Disembark at Ittoqqortoormiit, the largest village in the region with around 500 inhabitants. Explore Greenlandic traditions and observe sled dogs. In the evening, sail along the picturesque Blosseville Coast.
Day 7: Exploring Stewart Ø
Navigate around Stewart Ø, a traditional hunting ground and habitat for polar bears and narwhals. Ancient Thule houses can still be seen on the island.
Day 8: Exploring the Inner Fjords
Kayak and navigate through Turner Sound and Rømer Fjord, deep fjords providing unique opportunities to observe narwhals.
Day 9: Marine Life and Northern Lights
A day at sea aboard the Hondius with chances to spot cetaceans and seabirds. In the evening, enjoy the magical display of the Northern Lights in the Arctic sky.
Day 10: Return to Iceland
Disembark in Akureyri and take an optional bus transfer (upon reservation) back to Reykjavik.
