Sea kayaking under the midnight sun, among Arctic islands and fjords
More than 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, the mountains seem to rise directly from the sea. We paddle between islands covered in green meadows, deep fjords, pale beaches and cliffs still streaked with snow.
For six days, our kayaks carry everything required for a self-supported journey around Ringvassøya, Rebbenesøya and Kvaløya. Each evening, we select a location suited to the conditions, unload our equipment and set up camp facing the mountains.
In July, daylight accompanies us almost continuously. The midnight sun remains visible until approximately the third week of the month; even when it brushes the horizon, the night never becomes truly dark.

What makes this expedition unique
- A six-day self-supported journey: the kayaks carry our camping equipment, personal belongings and part of our food supplies.
- The light of the Far North: in July, daylight is continuous and the sun remains above or very close to the horizon throughout the night.
- A remarkable variety of landscapes: deep fjords, green islands, beaches with turquoise water, cliffs and snow-streaked summits.
- Arctic wildlife: reindeer on land, seals and occasionally cetaceans at sea, as well as numerous seabirds, although no wildlife sighting can ever be guaranteed.
- A genuine sea kayaking expedition: rugged coastlines, headlands and more exposed stretches require solid previous experience and continuous adaptation to the conditions.
Tromsø: an Arctic city on the edge of the wilderness
Tromsø was long one of the major departure points for polar exploration. Today, it remains the lively centre of Northern Norway, with its harbour, university, Polar Museum and airport.
Only a few kilometres away, the landscape changes completely. Houses become sparse, roads disappear behind the mountains and the coastline regains its wild character. The Gulf Stream gives this coastal region a maritime influence that contrasts with inland areas at the same latitude.
Our expedition begins north of Tromsø, in the Hansnes area. The route unfolds among Ringvassøya, Rebbenesøya and Kvaløya, through a vast territory of fjords, islands and sea passages offering numerous possible itineraries.

Five nights camping beneath the mountains
Camping is at the heart of this expedition. Each evening, we land in an area suited to the route and conditions, unload the kayaks and set up a lightweight camp. In the morning, everything is taken down, packed into dry bags and loaded back into the boats before departure.
We follow a discreet, leave-no-trace approach. Camping locations depend on genuine landing possibilities, exposure to the wind, tides, weather and the local regulations in force.
Tents & camping equipment
- MSR Elixir 2 and Hubba Hubba tents, selected for their reliability and compact size inside the kayaks.
- Camping stoves, cooking equipment and cookware required to prepare meals.
- A group mess tent, used according to the group configuration and conditions.
- Dry bags for organising personal belongings and equipment inside the boats.
Each participant brings their own warm sleeping bag, sleeping mat and personal belongings. Space inside the kayaks remains limited, so careful equipment selection is an integral part of preparing for the trip.
Meals
All meals during the six-day sea kayaking expedition are included. Lunches are picnics and hot evening meals are prepared together at camp. When conditions, regulations and the catch allow, mackerel, cod or pollock may supplement our meals.
In Tromsø, breakfast is included with both hotel nights. Lunches and dinners in Tromsø are not included.
Eight days in Norway — six days on the water
This programme shows the usual logic of the expedition. Individual stages may be modified, shortened, moved or completed in a different order according to the weather, sea conditions, level of the group and safety requirements.
- Day 1 — Arrival in Tromsø
Arrival in Tromsø, check-in at the 3-star hotel and an initial opportunity to explore the city depending on the flight schedule. Meet the guide, prepare for the expedition and review the conditions ahead. Night at the hotel in a double room. Dinner is not included. - Day 2 — Tromsø → Hansnes → northern Ringvassøya
Transfer to Hansnes, preparation and fitting of the kayaks, then departure on our expedition. We begin our journey among the islands and establish our first camp in the northern part of Ringvassøya.
- Day 3 — Among islands and fjords towards Hersøya
We progress towards Hersøya through a landscape of islands, passages and mountains. From camp, the view opens northwards and, when the sky clears, may offer exceptional light around midnight. - Day 4 — North coast of Rebbenesøya → Breivika
We follow the north coast of Rebbenesøya and enter a more exposed area before reaching the beach at Breivika. The exposure of this stage requires careful use of the available weather window.
- Day 5 — South towards Kvaløya
We turn south, with the possibility of resupplying in a village before continuing towards Kvaløya. We camp on a small island or in a sheltered area beneath the mountains. - Day 6 — North coast of Kvaløya → Grøtfjord → Ersfjord
We follow the north coast of Kvaløya, cross the Grøtfjord area and enter Ersfjord, surrounded by steep summits that plunge directly into the sea.
- Day 7 — Ersfjord → Ersfjordbotn → Tromsø
Our final day of kayaking gradually takes us back towards inhabited areas. We paddle up the fjord to Ersfjordbotn, the endpoint of our sea journey, before returning to Tromsø. Night at the 3-star hotel in a double room. Dinner is not included. - Day 8 — Tromsø and departure
Breakfast at the hotel, followed by free time depending on the flight schedule. A visit to the Polar Museum may be possible before heading to the airport. Lunch is not included.
🧭 Pace & paddling: schedules and distances vary according to the stages, wind, swell and landing possibilities. Level 3 requires the ability to complete six consecutive days in a loaded kayak and remain comfortable in an isolated, changing environment.
What does a typical day look like?
We begin with breakfast at camp, take down the tents and load the kayaks. After a weather briefing, we select the stage best suited to the conditions. The morning is spent paddling among the islands, along the coast or inside the fjords.
Lunch is a picnic ashore. In the afternoon, we continue to the area selected for the night. The kayaks are pulled safely out of the water, the tents are pitched and equipment is put out to dry before we prepare a hot dinner. Daylight then continues long beyond the hours we would normally expect.
Kayaks, equipment & safety
Voyage Kayak provides equipment suited to a multi-day Arctic expedition. Kayaks and equipment are allocated according to each participant’s size and experience and to the composition of the group.
- Single and double kayaks: Valley and North Shore models.
- Paddles: Werner and TNP, in different lengths and blade sizes.
- Dry suits: NRS, Kokatat and Typhoon.
- Personal equipment provided: buoyancy aid, spray deck and dry bags.
- Camping: MSR Elixir 2 and Hubba Hubba tents, camping stoves, cooking equipment and a mess tent when required.
- Group safety: equipment suited to an isolated sea kayaking expedition, daily briefings and continuous reassessment of conditions.
Personal equipment
Each participant brings a sleeping bag with a suitable comfort rating, a sleeping mat, thermal and windproof clothing, footwear that can be worn in the water, a warm hat, gloves, full sun protection, a head torch and an eye mask for sleeping despite the continuous daylight. The trip begins in Tromsø on Day 1 and ends in Tromsø on Day 8. The precise meeting time and location are provided before departure. International flights are not included.

This trip is rated Level 3. Solid previous sea kayaking experience, good physical condition and the ability to complete six consecutive days in a loaded kayak are required. Participation is subject to approval of our paddling-level questionnaire.
Weather & itinerary
Northern Norway can experience rapid changes in wind, swell and visibility, even in summer. The guide reassesses headlands, crossings, stages and camping locations every day. Our aim is to create the best possible expedition in safe conditions, not to follow a rigid route.
Daylight & sleep
In July, daylight remains present throughout the night. An eye mask is strongly recommended for sleeping both in tents and at the hotel. Even when the air feels cool, sun protection and sunglasses remain essential.
Insurance and travel formalities
No additional travel insurance is included. Each participant must have, at a minimum, cover for medical treatment abroad, repatriation and search-and-rescue costs appropriate to the activity. Up-to-date administrative requirements are provided in the Road Book before departure.

Is the midnight sun guaranteed?
The midnight sun is visible in the Tromsø region until approximately the third week of July. Its visibility nevertheless depends on the exact trip dates and cloud cover. Even later in the month, the night remains very light.
Can we see wildlife?
The region is home to reindeer, seals, seabirds and occasionally cetaceans. These are completely wild encounters and can never be guaranteed.
