When you dream of sailing to Antarctica or Svalbard, choosing the ship matters almost as much as the destination. Ship size, comfort, capacity, the onboard atmosphere—everything shapes the experience.
At Voyage Kayak, I’m lucky to guide on several Oceanwide Expeditions vessels. Here’s an insider’s look at three emblematic ships: Plancius, Ortelius and Hondius.

🚢 Plancius — Expedition Spirit
A former Dutch Navy oceanographic vessel, Plancius has kept its explorer soul. With about 100 passengers, it offers an intimate atmosphere—perfect if you value a pioneering feel over luxury trimmings.
On board: simple, comfortable cabins, a large panoramic lounge for briefings, and wide, open decks close to the sea.
👉 Why choose Plancius? For the authentic expedition vibe, a family-like atmosphere and immediate proximity to nature.

🚢 Ortelius — The Rugged Scientist
Originally built for Russian research, Ortelius is renowned for its toughness. With an ice class comparable to 1A (UL1), it can venture into more demanding zones where pack ice tightens.
It also carries around 100 passengers, with a friendly, slightly more “hardy” feel. The broad exterior decks are excellent for photographers.
👉 Why choose Ortelius? For its adventurous character, scientific look, and ability to push exploration a little farther.

🚢 Hondius — Modern Comfort in the Ice
The newest in the fleet, Hondius is a Polar Class 6 ship built for modern polar expeditions. Larger (up to ~170 passengers), it still preserves the expedition spirit thanks to smooth operations and a reinforced guiding team.
Cabins are more spacious—some with balconies—and bright shared spaces raise the comfort level on long voyages.
👉 Why choose Hondius? To combine deep polar immersion with modern comfort—ideal if you want adventure without compromising well-being.
Different Ships for Different Voyages
Not every itinerary runs on the same vessel.
Some Antarctic departures sail on Plancius, others on Ortelius or Hondius. Availability depends on season, routes (Antarctic Peninsula, crossing the Polar Circle, subantarctic islands, etc.), and group size.

A Guide’s Take
Whether you’re on Plancius, Ortelius or Hondius, the essence is the same: the expedition mindset. On each of these ships I lead the kayak outings—and once you’re on the water, between glaciers and icebergs, the magic is identical.
