Ten days in Menorca, including eight days of sea kayaking around the island, with seven nights camping and two hotel nights in Ciutadella.

Sea kayaking around Menorca: 140 kilometres of wild Mediterranean coastline

Ciutadella disappears behind our bows and the island begins to unfold around us. For eight days, we follow the coastline of Menorca at the pace set by the wind and sea, aiming to complete a loop of approximately 140 km.

The south offers the bright landscapes of the Migjorn: limestone cliffs, caves and coves with pale sand. To the east, the vast natural harbour of Maó opens the way towards Favàritx and Es Grau. The north coast then reveals a completely different character, with dark or rust-coloured rocks, more exposed headlands, broad bays and rugged coves all the way back to Ciutadella.

Each evening, our kayaks carry the camp to a new location. We land, pull the boats safely ashore and set up a lightweight camp before setting off again the following morning. This is a genuine self-supported journey: simple, immersive and demanding.

What makes this expedition unique

• A genuine island circumnavigation: approximately 140 km of paddling to discover Menorca from the sea rather than from the road.
• Two strikingly different coastlines: white limestone and bright coves in the south; older rocks, exposed headlands and rugged landscapes in the north.
• Eight self-supported days: all camping equipment travels in the kayaks, and the camp moves with the group each evening.
• An island recognised for its natural heritage: Menorca is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with wetlands, dunes, seagrass meadows and remarkably well-preserved coastal areas.
• A committed sea kayaking journey: Level 3 requires solid previous experience, good physical condition and an understanding that the programme remains highly dependent on conditions.

Two faces of the Mediterranean on one island

The south coast, known as the Migjorn, is characterised by its bright coves: Macarelleta, Cala des Talaier, Cala en Porter… Limestone cliffs, pine forests and white-sand beaches create a luminous Mediterranean landscape.

In the north, the Tramuntana offers a completely different atmosphere. The rocks become dark, red or ochre, the headlands more exposed and the coves more rugged. Cavalleria, Algaiarens and Cala Morell can feel like an entirely different island.

Between the two, the route passes Maó, Es Grau, Favàritx and Fornells through a succession of bays, headlands and protected areas.

Seven nights camping: the camp travels with us

Camping is at the heart of this expedition. At the end of each day, we land in an area suited to the route and conditions, unload the equipment from the kayaks and set up a lightweight camp. In the morning, everything is packed away and loaded back into the boats before we depart.

We follow a discreet, leave-no-trace approach. Locations are chosen according to the conditions, genuine landing possibilities and the local regulations in force at the time of the trip.

Tents & camping equipment

• Two- or three-person MSR tents, selected for their light weight, reliability and compact packed size inside the kayaks.
• Camping stoves and shared cooking equipment.
• Cookware and everything needed to prepare meals during the journey.
• Dry bags for organising personal belongings and equipment inside the kayaks.

Each participant brings their own sleeping bag, sleeping mat and personal belongings. As with any self-supported journey, space in the kayaks is limited, so travelling light is an integral part of the experience.

Meals

All meals during the eight-day kayaking journey are included. Lunches are picnics, generally enjoyed on a beach or in a cove. Hot evening meals are prepared at camp in a friendly, participatory atmosphere. Breakfast provides the energy needed for the day’s stage.

Breakfast is included with both hotel nights in Ciutadella. Over the entire trip, only dinner on Day 1 and lunch on Day 10 are not included.

Ten days in Menorca — eight days on the water

The programme below shows the usual logic of the circumnavigation. The direction of travel and distribution of the stages may be completely reversed or modified according to the wind and sea conditions.

• Day 1 — Arrival in Ciutadella
  Arrival in Menorca and check-in at the hotel in Ciutadella. This first day gives the group time to meet, prepare the equipment required for the journey and review the initial weather forecast. Night at the hotel, with breakfast included the following morning. Dinner is not included.
• Day 2 — Ciutadella → Cala en Bosch → Macarelleta area
  We prepare and load the kayaks before setting off on our first stage. Leaving Ciutadella, we gradually make our way towards the south coast. After passing Cala en Bosch, we paddle between limestone cliffs and coves towards the Macarelleta area. Our first night is spent camping.

• Day 3 — South coast · Macarelleta → Cala des Talaier → Cala en Porter
  We continue along the Migjorn, Menorca’s limestone south coast. Beaches, caves and white cliffs follow one another, with opportunities to swim, snorkel or simply enjoy the coves during our breaks. We camp in an area suited to the day’s stage.
• Day 4 — South-eastern point · Illa de l’Aire area
  Our journey continues towards the south-eastern point of Menorca. Depending on the weather, sea conditions and regulations applicable at the time of the trip, the route may pass close to Illa de l’Aire and make the most of the paddling opportunities in this area.

• Day 5 — East coast · Maó → Sa Mesquida
  We discover the impressive natural harbour of Maó before continuing towards the east coast. Beyond the more developed area, the coastline quickly becomes wild again. We camp near Sa Mesquida or in a neighbouring area, depending on conditions.
• Day 6 — Favàritx → Es Grau
  The coastline becomes more rugged and rocky. We pass Cape Favàritx before reaching Es Grau and S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park. The day’s route is adapted to the weather and available landing places.

• Day 7 — Arenal d’en Castell → Fornells
  We progress towards the north of the island through large bays and more exposed sections. The stage takes us towards Fornells, an immense natural bay offering several possible shelters depending on the conditions.
• Day 8 — Cape Cavalleria → Cala Viola de Ponent
  This is a more exposed and maritime stage. Cape Cavalleria marks the north of Menorca and can be affected by wind and swell. We adapt our paddling to the available weather window before continuing towards Cala Viola de Ponent.

• Day 9 — Algaiarens → Cala Morell → return to Ciutadella
  Our final day on the water follows the north-west coast past Algaiarens and Cala Morell before completing the loop in Ciutadella. After seven nights camping, we return to the hotel for our final night. Dinner is included.
• Day 10 — Departure from Menorca
  Breakfast at the hotel, followed by the end of the trip. Lunch on Day 10 is not included.

🧭 Pace & distances: expect approximately 20 to 25 km per day, or around 4 to 6 hours of kayaking including breaks. The target total distance is approximately 140 km, but safety and conditions always take priority over mileage.

What does a typical day look like?

We start with breakfast at camp, take down the tents and load the kayaks. After a weather briefing, we choose the day’s stage according to the conditions. The morning is spent paddling, with stops to explore coves and caves or simply to swim.

Lunch is a picnic ashore. In the afternoon, we continue to the area selected for the night. Once the kayaks are safely out of the water, we set up camp, dry our equipment and prepare a hot dinner. Night falls, the pace slows and we settle in until the following morning.

Kayaks, equipment & logistics

As in Milos, Voyage Kayak uses its own fleet, giving us reliable boats suited to a range of paddler sizes. This independence allows us to prepare the equipment specifically for a multi-day expedition.

• Single kayaks: DAG Ysak; Zegul Reval Low Volume, Medium Volume and High Volume; P&H Scorpio Medium Volume and High Volume; TRAK 2.0.
• Double kayak: DAG Biwok, available according to individual needs and the composition of the group.
• Paddles: Werner and Aqua Bound paddles in different lengths and blade sizes; Greenland paddles are also available for those accustomed to using them.
• Personal equipment provided: buoyancy aid, spray deck and dry bags.
• Group safety: equipment suited to a multi-day sea kayaking journey, daily briefings and continuous reassessment of the conditions.
• Camping: two- or three-person MSR tents, camping stoves and shared cooking equipment.

Personal equipment

Each participant brings a sleeping bag, sleeping mat, clothing suitable for kayaking and camping, footwear that can be worn in the water, full sun protection and a head torch. The detailed packing list is provided with the Road Book.

This trip is for you if…

• You have solid previous sea kayaking experience and are comfortable spending several consecutive days on the water.
• You can paddle for 4 to 6 hours and cover 20 to 25 km per day for eight days.
• You enjoy camping, outdoor living and self-supported travel, with deliberately simple comfort.
• You are ready to take part in camp life, including pitching tents, preparing meals and helping with daily organisation.
• You understand that completing the full circumnavigation is never guaranteed at all costs: the direction of travel and individual stages may change with the wind and sea conditions.
• You are looking for a small-group expedition that feels more like a genuine sea journey than a conventional beach holiday.

Practical information

Start and end of the trip

The trip begins in Ciutadella on Day 1 and ends in Ciutadella on Day 10 after breakfast. Full meeting and access information is provided before departure.

Level

This trip is rated Level 3. Solid previous sea kayaking experience and good physical condition are required to complete eight consecutive paddling days in a loaded kayak. Participation is subject to approval of our paddling-level questionnaire.

Weather & direction of travel

Menorca is particularly exposed to changing winds. The direction of the circumnavigation is therefore decided according to the forecast and may be reversed. Headlands, crossings, stages and camping locations are reassessed each day. Our aim is to create the best possible journey, not to force a stage when the conditions are unsuitable.
