What is your sea kayaking level? This free self-assessment helps you estimate which Voyage Kayak trip level best matches your experience, from Level 1 to Level 5.
The test is not based only on how many kilometres you can paddle. It considers your kayak technique, real experience at sea, the conditions you have actually encountered, your endurance, safety skills and relevant transferable experience such as river kayaking or surfski.
Voyage Kayak levels are inspired by skills from the French FFCK Pagaies Couleurs system and international paddling progression frameworks, but they are adapted specifically to participation in professionally guided sea kayaking trips. Your result is intended to help you choose an appropriate trip; it is not an official qualification.
For a simple explanation of Levels 1 to 5, see our sea kayaking levels and trip difficulty guide.
Assess your sea kayaking level
Answer according to what you can genuinely do today and the conditions you have actually experienced. If your experience is several years old, say so: it still counts, but recent practice is a better indication of your current level.
Sea kayaking level self-assessment
This self-assessment is based on skills from the French FFCK Pagaies Couleurs system, adapted to participation in guided Voyage Kayak trips. It does not award any official FFCK or Euro Paddle Pass qualification.
The questionnaire considers your technique, real sea experience, physical condition and other relevant paddling experience.
0. Basic water-confidence requirements
Required
Both requirements are essential for taking part in a kayaking trip.
1. Physical condition and endurance
Needs preparation
Physical fitness does not replace technical skills. It can, however, make Level 2 more accessible and in some cases support a possible Level 3 after validation by Voyage Kayak.
Complete your profile.
2. Your real sea experience
Experience
Answer based on conditions you have actually experienced in a sea kayak, not what you think you could manage. For any pathway to Level 3 or above, the experience must have been gained in a decked single sea kayak with a spraydeck. Older experience is still considered, but its effect is deliberately reduced.
For technical questions: tick a skill if you can actually perform it in the kayak described above, even if you do not know the exact technical term.
3. Level 1 — Beginner
Basics
Voyage Kayak reference: the basic skills should be generally in place; one isolated skill may still be developing.
4. Level 2 — Intermediate
Boat control
Voyage Kayak reference: straight-line paddling, stopping and changing direction are essential. One of the other two skills may still be missing. With these three foundations and good physical condition, Level 2 may remain accessible even if reverse paddling and sideways movement still need work.
5. Level 3 — Experienced
Comfort in moderate sea conditions
A calm wet exit after capsizing with a spraydeck, endurance, bracing and control in small waves form the technical foundation of Level 3. Other skills remain useful but can be supported by professional guiding.
Voyage Kayak reference: direct Level 3 requires previous experience of calmly releasing a spraydeck and exiting after a capsize, the ability to paddle for several hours, brace effectively and control the kayak in small waves. A recent full day on open water around Beaufort Force 3, or several comparable outings, can also support Level 3, but does not replace a calm wet exit. Deep-water re-entry becomes compulsory for Level 4.
6. Level 4 — Advanced
Advanced sea kayaker
Voyage Kayak reference: Level 4 requires deep-water re-entry, several recent full days around an established Beaufort Force 3 in genuine slight seas with small waves, plus course control, bracing, beach work, rescue and towing. Wind experienced only inside a sheltered area is not enough. A single Beaufort 3 day keeps the result at Level 3. Rolling, independent navigation and group communication are valuable but are not compulsory for a guided trip.
7. Level 5 — Expert / rough sea conditions
Expert / rougher sea conditions
Voyage Kayak reference: Level 5 requires a very complete skill set, a reliable roll and several separate outings with significant periods around Beaufort Force 4 in rougher sea conditions. One outing, even a long one, is not enough. A recent FFCK Red Sea Kayak Paddle, or a foreign qualification already recognised as equivalent by Voyage Kayak, can also provide direct access to this level.
When did you last practise these advanced safety skills?
Levels 4–5
This question appears only when your skills could lead to Level 4 or 5. A recently obtained Blue or Red qualification counts as recent practice of these skills.
8. Transferable experience
Pathways
These experiences and qualifications can influence your Voyage Kayak trip level. A foreign qualification is only treated as equivalent after review by Voyage Kayak.
The assessment considers the type of activity, the level actually reached and how recent the experience is. Older experience still counts, but pathways are deliberately more conservative.
9. Double kayak
Several recent days in a decked double sea kayak with a spraydeck give direct access to Level 2. From Level 3 onward, experience and answers must refer to a single sea kayak. Depending on the trip, a double kayak may nevertheless make it possible to include someone whose experience is slightly below the recommended level; this remains subject to Voyage Kayak approval.
This is an indicative self-assessment. Final participation also depends on the itinerary, daily paddling time, expected conditions, group composition and validation by Voyage Kayak.
How should you interpret your Voyage Kayak level?
Your result indicates the trip level you can reasonably consider and, where useful, the skills worth working on or any points that should be confirmed with Voyage Kayak.
- Level 1 — Beginner: first foundations and basic kayak control.
- Level 2 — Intermediate: you can genuinely control your kayak and follow a guided journey.
- Level 3 — Experienced: good sea-kayaking foundations, confidence in small waves and the ability to paddle for several hours.
- Level 4 — Advanced: experience of several full days at sea, deep-water re-entry, assisted rescue, towing and good boat control.
- Level 5 — Expert / rough sea conditions: autonomy and strong technical skills in rougher sea conditions, including advanced safety skills and a reliable roll.
A Level 4 or 5 paddler can of course join a Level 3 trip. The level shown on each trip is the minimum recommended level before departure.
Why is the test not based only on distance?
In sea kayaking, daily distance alone does not define difficulty. Paddling 20 km on calm water is very different from paddling 20 km into the wind, in short confused seas or after several consecutive days on the water.
That is why the self-assessment combines technique, sea-condition experience, safety skills and physical condition. This better reflects the reality of a multi-day sea kayaking journey.
Can river kayaking, surfski or double-kayak experience count?
Yes. Some activities provide directly transferable skills. The questionnaire takes account of experience in river kayaking, surfski, double sea kayaking and some wave sports. These pathways are deliberately conservative because they do not replace every skill specific to sea kayaking.
Frequently asked questions about sea kayaking level
Do I need to be able to roll to join a trip?
No for Voyage Kayak Levels 1 to 4. A reliable roll is an advantage at Level 4, but it is not compulsory. It becomes essential at Level 5.
Does this self-assessment award an FFCK Paddle or Euro Paddle Pass qualification?
No. It estimates your level for joining a guided Voyage Kayak trip. Official qualifications must be awarded through the relevant organisation and assessment process.
Does experience from several years ago still count?
Yes. Older experience remains valuable, but safety skills and confidence in stronger conditions need to be maintained. When significant practice is more than two years old, the assessment deliberately becomes more cautious.
Can strong fitness compensate for limited technique?
To some extent at the lower levels. Good endurance can make Level 2 more accessible and, in some cases, make Level 3 worth considering. It never replaces the technical and safety skills required for Levels 4 and 5.
What if we are travelling together and want to use a double kayak?
A double kayak can sometimes allow a couple or two friends to join the same trip when one paddler has more experience than the other. This depends on the trip, both paddlers’ experience and the expected conditions, and remains subject to Voyage Kayak approval.
